TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

Suicide Prevention Partnership’s (SPP) training program is designed to prepare you to work as a volunteer crisis intervention hotline counselor. To become a counselor, you must attend all formal training sessions, fulfill the roleplay practice requirement (which can be done during the formal training sessions), and complete ICAROL training (our computer software).

FORMAL TRAINING SESSIONS: Include a combination of lecture, experiential exercises, interactive exercises, films, etc. designed to acquaint you with a variety of mental health issues and how they specifically manifest themselves in hotline work. The dates and times of the formal training sessions are listed elsewhere in this training packet.

ROLEPLAY PRACTICE: These small group sessions are held during the formal training days, and are facilitated by SPP counselors. You will practice a counseling situation with other trainees. A minimum of seven roleplays as counselor and seven as client is required. It should be stressed that this is simply the MINIMUM - you are encouraged to do as many as you like in order to feel confident about moving to the next step and actually taking calls.

ICAROL Training: We use this software to enter data on each call, to consult an information & referral database, to track risk assessment, and to do our hotline scheduling.

COMMITMENT: We generally ask for a commitment of an average of 4 hours per week for a minimum of one year. If you are unable to make this level of commitment, but you have some time available that you would like to contribute, we are open to flexible commitment arrangements.

ANY QUESTIONS? Call SPP at 719-573-7447.

Enclosed is an overview of the training. We require a screening interview prior to training. The training class will be limited to 40 trainees. After receiving applications from prospective volunteers, we will contact potential trainees to come in for an interview. We ask for a $20.00 donation to help defray the cost of training materials (you will receive a 300+ page training manual with a great deal of information regarding the issues you are likely to encounter on the crisis hotline).

If you would like to become a volunteer crisis intervention counselor at SPP, please complete the enclosed application and return it as soon as possible, by no later than October 3, 2010 (but please try to return it sooner than that - we will need time to do an interview and the class starts on July 29). If you have any questions, please call SPP at 719-573-7447. We welcome the opportunity to hear from you.
